1st Graders Used iPads to Create Veggie and Fruit Portraits!

1st grade artists are in the middle of a unit inspired by the book, "The Lima Bean Monster" by Dan Yaccarino. Students are painting vegetable and fruit portraits to remind us that we should eat our veggies and fruits to stay healthy. Veggie and fruit portraits are also being created on our iPads using the app Faces iMake.

We Sent Comments to our Buddy Schools Today/Artsonia

My classes were only 20-25 minutes long today due to our half day schedule. It was the perfect opportunity to introduce my students to our new comment buddies on Artsonia.

B.A. artists will be admiring artwork on Artsonia and sending comments to artists who attend these schools. We will be receiving comments from these schools too. Parents, please be sure to approve comments when they arrive in your emails. You must approve them first before they will appear publicly in your child's gallery.

1st Gr. Artists Practiced "Visual Texture" on Whiteboard

Some 1st grade artists used our interactive whiteboard to practice making visual texture before actually drawing textures on their papers. Others practiced on worksheets at their tables.

1st Grade "Monsters". Don't Worry! They Are Friendly!

We read the book, "Leonardo the Terrible Monster" by Mo Willems during art class. Leonardo tried to be scary and mean to Sam. After seeing how sad Sam was, Leonardo decided to be a good friend instead. Leonardo and Sam are both happier being friends. They only scare each other to be silly now.
1st Grade artists made friendly monsters in honor of Leonardo.
This lesson was inspired by the "Wild Things" that 1st graders at Dryden Elementary School made. We watched the video "Visual Texture"

B.A. Superheroes: Super Shields and Super Songs!

B.A. heroes have been returning to the "Capitol of Creativity"! As they fly into the art room for the first time this year, students are designing their own "Super Shields"! They are revealing their inner superhero powers by writing sentences on their shields that describe the things that they will do this year to make it super. These shields support the art room rules. The 4 R's of the Art Room are 1. Respect Yourself 2. Respect Others 3. Respect Materials 4. Respect the Art Room/ Studio

We are discovering heroic characteristics of each other and reviewing the things that we will do to best learn, be safe, and have fun.

A few shields from each class will be displayed on my bulletin boards by the art room. (Photos of bulletin boards will be added here soon)

Some students who have 40 minute art classes this week may be able to create “Super Songs” too! Unfortunately, the students who had art for only 15-20 minutes on Tuesday did not have time to create songs. Those who have time and want to participate are reading their heroic sentences into the app, “Songify” on my iPhone. Songify then turns their spoken words into a song. The app distorts their voices so much that student identities are not revealed. This app does not allow users to pause during a recording, which means that we are creating each song in one take. Some words may not be recognizable because of the effects that Songify applies to the songs, but we still think they rock!
